MEEKER I Each year the ERBM Recreation and Park District sponsors a community garden.
Located on the north end of the upper parking lot at the Meeker Recreation Center, the garden is designed for gardening ease. The ground has been worked and is ready to go. After relocating the garden two summers ago, soil improvement has been a priority with our park staff. This year, soil quality promises to reward gardeners with bumper crops.
Gardeners are responsible for planting, weeding and harvesting; the district will help with watering. Plots are assigned on a first come, first served basis with numerous plots still available. There are no bad plots.
Community gardens can produce fresh produce and plants as well as providing satisfying labor, a sense of community and connection to the environment. A community garden can be as diverse as its community of gardeners. Some choose to solely grow flowers, others grow vegetables for personal use, while some are nurtured communally and their bounty shared. Anyone needing information on the best plants to grow in our area can contact the county Extension office at 878-9490.
The garden is for anyone in the community to use at no charge. Visit the Meeker Recreation Center at 101 Ute Road to see the plot map and choose a garden site, or call 878-3403 for further information. The snow is off of LO7, so you can plant anytime now.
