Up and Down El Rio Blanco: In the merry month of May

First let me write: Happy birthday, Haylee!
May is definitively my favorite month of the year. It is the month my daughter and only granddaughter were born, it has my favorite holiday – Mother’s Day (May 13, don’t forget), and it brings the peak of spring and all that spring in Rio Blanco County entails.
Our doorbell rang early May Day morning and when I opened the door I found only a handmade paper vase of flowers and candy at the door step. Thanks to the special people who started my favorite month with the nice traditional gesture.
My daughter Haylee was born on this day 29 years ago, which is when I first started considering May as my favorite month of the year. I don’t believe it was coincidence my only granddaughter was born in the same month, I thank God for Brookelynn Jolie everyday.
I believe mothers were God’s greatest creation and May 13 is the day we get to show our appreciation and celebrate what our mothers have done and continue to do for us every month and every day of the year.
May also brings new wildlife and our county’s natural beauty into full color and I enjoy the opportunities to play in and photograph it daily.
May 8 is also the day for Rio Blanco County special district elections to be decided. Please exercise your right to vote. The Eastern and Western Rio Blanco Metropolitan Recreation and Park Districts have both mailed ballots to district voters, as has the Eastern Rio Blanco County Health Service District. Rangely Town Hall will be the polling place for the WRBM election. ERBM voters can drop off their ballots at the Fairfield Center in Meeker between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. May 8.
The Colorado State Track and Field Championships are also held in May and I enjoy watching our county’s athletes compete against the best in our state. Rio Blanco County has several runners and jumpers who have or will qualify for the state meet, including multi-event state placer and defending state triple jump champ Kathryn Doll, held in our state’s capitol city, starting May 17.
May is also a month of new beginnings for many of our students in the county as it is the traditional month for high school and college graduations. Our county is fortunate to have Colorado Northwestern Community College, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and will graduate the class of 2012 this Saturday, May 5. High school seniors in Rangely will be graduated Sunday, May 20 and Meeker High School will graduate its seniors Saturday, May 26.
What I like most about May, however, is the word “may” when used as a verb and preceded with two more of my favorite words: yes, you may.
