MEEKER | “A great game to end the season,” head coach Shane Phelan said of his team’s 40-7 win over the Hotchkiss Bulldogs. The entire team was able to travel and play at some point.
The first half ended with a score of 24-0, but then with only 7:12 left in the third quarter the Cowboys had scored two more times and were up 40-0. With Meeker up by 40 points, the rest of the game was a running clock.
Scoring for the Cowboys were Ryan Phelan with four, Tristan Willie with two, Tevon Pelloni had a recovered fumble on defense and six points, and Andy Kracht and Jeremy Woodward both with 14.
“We did some good things, and the young guys got in,” Phelan said. “We now have a golden opportunity in the playoffs.”
Meeker, currently ranked eighth in the RPI, is hosting No. 9 ranked Holyoke. The Cowboys have battled for the last four years in the regular season against Holyoke, this year being the exception, and now there is another opportunity. The Cowboys have a win-loss record of 6-2 with two bye weeks, Holyoke has a record of 7-2.
“Playing on Saturday at 1 p.m. means that we have made it to the playoffs and the kids are excited,” Phelan said.
What should we expect in Holyoke? According to Phelan, “they have a young freshman quarterback and quite a few sophomores and juniors that are very talented, as well as a great coaching staff.”
Kickoff is Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m. at Starbuck Stadium. This is a CHSAA event and entry is $9 or $7 for seniors.
