125 years ago

-George Witter has been appointed undersheriff, vice Stuart Edgar resigned.

-Deputy Game Wardens Cardnell and Moody were arrivals on Tuesday’s stage, and a general shaking up was the result of their trip. At their instance Ed. Sanderson was arraigned before Justice Burnham Wednesday on the charge of buying and shipping deer hides, and it cost Sandy $25. The wardens are on the trail of other offenders in this section.

100 years ago

-The mail has been getting in late of evenings during the past two weeks, due to the very bad roads. Better times will be made from now on.

-Colin Smith had the misfortune to have his horse fall with him last Sunday and sustained a slight rupture which will keep him indoors for a few weeks. Dr. Farthing is attending to him.

-Noel Chapin, who returned from naval service some time ago, has been teaching the upper Coal Creek school.

-Jere Taylor, John Eliasen, Steve Overton and Calvin Peters were participants in the FFA shop contest held in Rifle, Monday. As a team, Steve Overton and Jere Taylor received a superior rating and placed first in team standings. Jere received 2 superiors and an excellent overall; John received 2 superiors; Steve received 3 superiors and a superior overall; and Calvin received 2 superiors.

-M.A. Fredericks Real Estate of Meeker this week announced the completion of a real estate purchase by John J. and Vivian Terlep of Pueblo who purchased the O.M. Hegwer place 28 east of Meeker on the White River. The new owners plan to spend part of the summer at their newly purchased property.

-The four Colony venture partners have agreed to a $12.5 million operation and field program aimed at commercial shale production. The semi–works plant on Parachute Creek will be de-activated for the next four to six months while engineering and a major revision are completed. The plant is expected to be in operation again within seven to 10 months. Meanwhile, employees of the Oil Shale Corp., which has operated the plant for the last two years, are being transferred to the company’s headquarters at Rocky Flats near Denver.

-Lynette Anderson, 17 of Boise, Idaho, received slight cuts on her feet and a passenger, Phylis Moody 16, of Boise, Idaho, received lacerations to her ankle as the result of an accident a half mile west of Blue Mountain at about 8 p.m. on March 4. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Miss Anderson was driving a 1954 Buick east on U.S. 40 when the vehicle went off the road to the left sideways, skidded 30 feet and rolled over one time. The vehicle received damages estimated at $200. Patrolman Eldon Hartley investigated the accident. After being advised by Idaho authorities Sheriff Dean Lawton and Patrol Sgt. Leland Acre obtained a search warrant and later located about eight ounces of marijuana beneath the front seat of the vehicle.

-Stubblefield announces candidacy for Sheriff. “I enjoy working with and teaching children, I implemented the ‘Officer Friendly Program’ here in Meeker, I teach the D.A.R.E. class to the fifth grade. I have been a Cub Scout leader the last 10 years and I serve as chairman for the Recreation District Board. I also hold a degree in law enforcement. My most satisfying case of 1993 was the investigation and arrest of a man for abuse of the elderly. I will not tolerate anyone who takes advantage of the elderly, physically or financially.”

-William Morrow & Co., N.Y., announced this week publication of THE PIXY AND THE LAZY HOUSEWIFE, written by Mary Calhoun (Mrs. Leon Wilkins) of Rangely. In the past 10 years she has had more than a dozen books published, including THE GOBLIN UNDER THE STAIRS (1968), THE LAST TWO ELVES IN DENMARK (1968), THE RUNAWAY BROWNIE (1967), THE THIEVING DWARFS (1967) and HIGH WIND FOR KANSAS (1965). In the latest book, a household sprite, the teasing pixy of Devon, was said to be a hard worker but a torment to the lazy housewife. In this lighthearted tale, illustrated by Janet McCaffery, Mary Calhoun has imagined a classic confrontation between devilish Willy Tatters, the leader of the pixies and Old Bess, the laziest housewife in all of Devon.

-The Dinosaur TOPS Club had a meeting on March 10. No one had to take “Petunia” the pig home, as every member lost weight this week. Elva Jean Murry was crowned queen this week, with the most weight loss. A 10-week bowling contest was won by the team of Evelyn Jones, Marge Miller, Doris Murry, Elva Jean Murry, Carol Murry and Susie Lancaster.

-Cutter Association at the track north of Rio Blanco Avenue and were watched by a large crowd. Plans have been announced for continuing the races each week with kid chariot races scheduled for next Sunday, starting at 2 p.m.

Rangely Times

-The newly formed Rio Blanco County area Crime Stoppers is seeking a person wanting to serve on its board of directors. The local Crime Stoppers chapter will help assist law enforcement agencies by providing cash rewards for those with information that could lead to an arrest or conviction of someone perpetrating a crime.

-The Rising Star Riders, a family saddle club in Vernal, Utah, is once again pleased to host Richard Shrake. Shrake, the internationally known horseman and highly respected trainer, instructor, lecturer and judge from Sunriver, Ore., will be teaching a three day colt breaking and riding clinic and workshop.

-Air Force Airman Cimarron J. Reeves has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. During the six weeks of training the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations.

  • Mormon crickets have hatched near Rangely. They were all sighted on BLM land north of Hwy. 64 near the junction of CR 96 and CR 1, down a dirt road near the Moffat County line.  The picture shown was taken yesterday by Mary Meinen from Rangely. She says the crickets are about the size of a ladybug (less than 1/2”). Some of them are actually yellow in color but most of them are darker. They are milling around and getting ready to start moving soon. Note: Photo is not to scale.
Rio Blanco County and the White River and Douglas Creek Conservation Districts are still asking for your help to identify additional hatch-outs of crickets so that control efforts can be put in place. The success of the program will highly depend upon local landowners and the public helping to locate crickets as soon as they hatch.  See last week’s paper for a list of ways to help or contact the County Weed & Pest District at 970-878-9670 or the Conservation District office at 970-878-9838 with any questions.
