The Meeker Herald — 125 years ago
• The very liberal offer of the Meeker Townsite company should be taken advantage of by our citizens. The company will soon have a patent to the townsite and builders will then have deeds issued to them.
• Our western critics would no doubt think it a desecration of the Sabbath to drive a herd of 800 or 1,000 head of cattle through town on Sunday. There are other large herds on the way here. Among them are Wilson Brothers with 8,000 head.
• Sam Fairfield has been “sighted” on the Rawlins road moving this way with 50,000 lbs. of freight for J.W. Hughes & Co.

• Rio Blanco County’s primary vote was heavier than usual. Martin Villa won the Democratic nomination over Bill Brennan. Ivo Shults had the upper hand for the Republicans against Frank Kennedy.
• The weather this past week has been fallish. We had one night when it was just one degree above freezing but the next night was back in the 40s. The high temperature for the week was 83 and the low 33.
• Cheryl Chytry married Larry Whiteman at a pretty church wedding Sept. 4, 1960.
• At the Rio Theatre: “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” in Cinemascope. “The Naked and the Dead” in Technicolor.
• Cowboy gridders, including Larry Story, Fred Oglesby, Jim Lancaster and Lonnie Shults, romped on Carbondale in the home opener, 32-2.

• Rev. Joe Johns, representing the Meeker Centennial Committee, recommended that the town council consider changing the name of Main Street to Fairfield Avenue in appreciation to Freeman Fairfield and to commemorate the 100th year of the town of Meeker.
• Steve and Carla Allen are the parents of a son, Dustin Kirk, born Friday, Sept. 13 at Craig Memorial Hospital.
• Lance Ross Pakuer, son of Buddy and Lisa Pakuer, celebrated his first birthday Sept. 19, 1985. Grandparents include Joe and Donna Collins of Meeker.
• It was said that freshman initiation was the best it has ever been. “It was great fun,” said seniors Lex Collins, John Halandras and Jason Steiner. Principal Hanks thinks initiation is a good way of welcoming the new class into the high school.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago
• An airport will be constructed in Rangely during the spring of 1961, according to the FAA.
• Rangely school enrollment up 6 percent, total now 796.
• Piceance Creek Basin thought to have trillion barrels of oil in place.
• Last year, 1,258 residents of Colorado turned to the U.S. Bureau of the Census for help in proving they were born.

Rangely Times — 30 years ago
• The Rangely Town Council voted unanimously to hold a special election to okay a 2 percent increase in the city sales tax.
• At the Campus Theatre: John Travolta in “Urban Cowboy,” and Jack Nicholson in “The Shining.”­

Rangely Times — 20 years ago
• The new Colorado Welcome Center in Dinosaur was dedicated on Sept. 13.
• The Rangely Board of Trustees discussed a possible recycling program for Rangely.
• Rangely High School senior Jerry Blankenship was named offensive player of the game for the 20 points he scored during the football game against West Grand. Milton Prater, Jason Harris and Blankenship were named defensive players of the game.
