Runners hit muddy course

Members of the Meeker cross country team at regionals, from left, Joe McPhail, Lathrop Hughes, Willis Begaye and coach Kris Casey. Front from left, Krissie Harman and Bailey Mantle.
MEEKER I We had a long drive to Cortez for the regional meet, it was quite muddy, but no rain on the day of the race and it was an awesome cross country course.
The course was a nice single track cross country course with lots of small hills in various places, along with one large hill called “Heartbreak Hill.” The kids also got to experience some nice muddy hills too. The boys did not run their best races of the season but finished about where they were ranked going into the race. Lathrop Hughes was our first to go across the finish line in 21st place with a time of 22.16, Willis Begaye was right on his heels in 22nd place and a time of 22.36. Joe McPhail was 26th with 24.28 and Bailey Mantle completed the race in 28th with a time of 28.05. There were 28 boys in the race.
Krissie Harman was our only state qualifier. She had a very nice race coming in 12th at 25.26 out of a field of 19 runners. She will compete Saturday at 9:30 a.m. in Aurora at the Arapahoe County Fairgrounds.
