Lady Cowboys take two on road trip

MEEKER I The head basketball coach for the Lady Cowboys was still on administrative leave when the team bus left Meeker last Friday for the south-central part of the state for two non-league games.
Meeker defeated Sangre de Cristo 48-41 last Friday then pounded Center 57-32 the following day.
“The kids responded well but that’s the kind of kids we have,” assistant coach Mike Dinwiddie said of the adversity his team has faced. “I think they enjoyed the trip and it’s always fun to be on the winning side.”
Meeker fell behind 7-15 after the first quarter against Sangre de Cristo but outscored their opponent 17-10 in the second quarter to pull within two at halftime.
“We got off to a slow start but got going in the second quarter,” Dinwiddie said.
Freshman Taylor Neilson hit a three-pointer in the second quarter and classmate Aly Ridings scored six, while junior Aubrey Walsh added four in the same period.
Six players, including the three aforementioned scored in the third quarter. Senior Becca de Vergie and Kaysyn Chintala each scored four, while senior Laura Glass and the others all added a basket. Meeker’s defense only allowed four points to be scored, while putting in 16 of their own.
“We got a lead in the third and were able to hold on,” Dinwiddie said.
Glass led Meeker with 13 points and Ridings finished in double figures at 10.
Coach Dinwiddie said several of his players were sick last Saturday and credited the play of Glass and de Vergie.
“We had a lot of sick kids but they played through it and we beat them handily,” Dinwiddie said of the game against the Center Vikings. “Laura and Becca were very important, especially rebounding. We dominated when they were both in and struggled when they were out.”
Meeker jumped out to a 24-8 lead at halftime and although they only outscored Center by one in the third quarter, the Lady Cowboys won by 25.
de Vergie led all scorers with 25 points and Neilson finished with seven, including another three-pointer. Senior Denee Chintala also hit a three-pointer and her sister Kaysyn finished with six, as did sophomore Jordan Brown. Glass, Kaylyn Edwards and Walsh all scored five and senior Elissa McLaughlin added a free throw.
