Cowboys pick up two victories over weekend

Senior Jake Nieslanik pulls down a rebound between two DeBeque defenders last week. The Cowboys will play DeBeque again Friday and will host Plateau Valley Saturday.
RBC I The Meeker Cowboys boys’ basketball team overpowered Debeque with a 76-33 score on Friday and used a strong second half to get by North Park 57-28 on Saturday to run their current winning streak to seven games and a 9-4 overall record. Meeker will play Debeque in the Dragons’ lair again on Friday, Feb. 4, before entertaining the 1A number eight ranked Plateau Valley Cowboys the next night. This will be the second time the teams have played each other this season and this one counts for the league standings. Earlier in the year the Cowboys upended previously unbeaten Plateau Valley 62-57.
Debeque was outmatched in nearly all aspects of the game Friday night as the ‘Pokes jumped all over the visiting Dragons in the first quarter to stake themselves to a 27-3 lead. Senior Jake Nieslanik led the Cowboy scoring barrage with eight points. Meeker didn’t let up much in the second as another scoring parade ended with the Cowboys up 49-13 at halftime. Debeque did manage to slow down the Cowboy scoring machine in the second half which saw several of the Meeker reserve players get playing time. The Dragons could only manage to get three players on the scoring table, while all but one of the Cowboys was able to light up the scoreboard. Cole Steiner and Nieslanik paced the Cowboy scorers with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Saturday, the visiting North Park Wildcats gave the Cowboys all the action they wanted in the first half. Meeker’s long range sharpshooters were having difficulty finding the target against the ‘Cats and had to revert to the strong inside game of Ryan Wix. Wix scored eight points in the first quarter to pace the ‘Pokes and match the ‘Cats score for an 11-11 tie. The second quarter, the Cowboys were able to open up a slim lead, again paced by eight more points from Wix, meanwhile, Sanchez of North Park was keeping his team close by scoring all 11 of his teams points. Meeker was up at the end of the second quarter by a slim 26-22 score. Meeker’s defense came out to play the third quarter and held the visitors scoreless until only :18 seconds were left in the quarter when Lytle hit a running jumper to give the ‘Cats their only points. Meanwhile Cole Steiner and Trey Morris got their sights adjusted and connected for five points each the stake the Cowboys to a breathing room lead of 43-24. The Cowboy defense didn’t give up in the fourth as North Park was only able to score four more points in the quarter while the home team tallied 14 behind Morris’ seven counters. Meeker was able to win going away by the 57-28 final. Wix’s 20 points led all scorers in the game, while Morris was able to account for 15. North Park only had two members of their entire team score as Sanchez counted for 18 and Lytle had 10.
