Cowboys fall to Eagles, beat Rams

Back from injury, Meeker senior Trevor Matrisciano scored seven points against Paonia.
MEEKER I Usually when you beat a good team in any sport it gets tougher to beat them again the second time you play. The Meeker Cowboy boys’ basketball team found this to be true as they traveled to Paonia for a rematch with the Paonia Eagles. After soundly defeating the Eagle team on the Meeker court 55-35, the Cowboys found the roles reversed as Paonia turned the tables on the ‘Pokes and came away with a 78-70 league victory Friday night. Saturday found Meeker returning to the friendly confines of their home gym to soundly defeat the Soroco Rams 70-37.
The Cowboys found themselves in a battle early Friday night as the hometown Eagles jumped out to a quick 17-13 first quarter lead. Ryan Wix paced the Cowboys with five points in the quarter. Meeker closed the gap in the second as Dylan Mobley and Kevin Eli scored eight and six points respectively. Meeker was able to outscore Paonia for the quarter 25-23 and halftime found a two-point ball game in favor of the Eagles 40-38. A third quarter letdown allowed Paonia the advantage they needed as they outscored the Cowboys by eight points 19-11 and lengthened their lead to 10 points 59-49. Meeker put on a furious rush in the waning moments of the fourth quarter but the Eagles held on to claim the league victory 78-70. Wix paced the Cowboys with 19, Cole Steiner tallied 15. In his first game back since undergoing knee surgery from a football injury, Trevor Matrisciano chipped in seven for the ‘Pokes.
Saturday afternoon, Meeker took control of the game early and never looked back. Starting the game with a 15-8 quarter, Soroco could only manage to get three players to score. The second quarter was more of the first as the ‘Pokes lengthened their lead to 32-18. A 21 point outburst in the third coupled with a good defensive effort from the Cowboys virtually put the game out of reach for the Rams. Meeker won going away 70-37. Jake Nieslanik led the Cowboys with 14 points while Trey Morris and Dylan Mobley each scored 11.
Meeker will wind down the regular season with a trip to Rangely on Friday evening, and will play their last home league game on Saturday against the West Grand Mustangs who knocked of top seeded Hayden by one point last Saturday.
