Letter to the Editor: Pet Rock Challenge

Dear Editor:
I am writing you with a story I feel is worth printing in your paper.
My 10-year-old twins with cerebral palsy are raising $5,000 to get a service dog. Mary’s Wondrous Things at 110 East 3rd St., Suite 101, Rifle, Colo., 81650, (970) 625-8555 and Wendll’s Wondrous Things at 594 Main. Meeker, Colo., 81641, (970) 878-3688 are having a fun competition to help us raise the funds needed to purchase this amazing animal.
The “Pet Rock for a Service Pet” competition has begun between these two friendly businesses to see who can raise the most money by April 15 for James and Libby.
James and Libby have painted “Pet Rocks for a Service Pet” to help raise the money for their dog. Their cousin, Chase Williams, who lives in Meeker along with his classmates at Barone Middle School, have painted “Pet Rocks” to raise money for the twins and their service dog, Odie. This is extremely special because none of these students have ever met James and Libby and most of them didn’t know what cerebral palsy was until Chase explained it to them.
Mary’s Wondrous Things was offered a challenge by Wendll’s to see who could raise the most for this cause.
I feel that this is a fun and light-hearted story that will end beautifully for all who participate. The children of Meeker are learning community pride, the importance of volunteering their time and helping children with disabilities reach a goal of independence and having a life filled with love and hope a dog can bring.

Mary’s Wondrous things will also be hosting a silent auction Saturday, April 23, where all proceeds will go for the twins and their service dog.
Our family has been so overwhelmed by the support and love we have received in our journey and hope that bringing Odie the service dog into the twins’ life will only add to the specialness of the twins.
I hope that you feel this is a story worth looking at and publishing As I stated before, it is fun and heartwarming.
Thank you for your time,
Katie Waechter
