Ladies split matches

MEEKER I Coming off four wins in their first tournament of the season, the lady Cowboys remained undefeated before a hometown crowd last Friday but lost their first match of the season in Oak Creek last Saturday. Meeker will play a triangular in Rangely this Saturday.Meeker controlled its home court and the match against the Hayden Tigers, winning all three games played.“The girls have bought in from the beginning of what we are trying to do, buying in from the beginning to the end of our game plan and it is refreshing and exciting,” head coach Christy Atwood said. “It was a great team effort, everyone contributed, did their job and it showed on the scoreboard.”Meeker won the first game 25-18, with good serving and defensive blocks.“Kathryn (Doll) had some good blocks and terminated plays at the net,” Atwood said.Meeker won the second game 25-21 and fell behind 2-6 in the third game, before tying the game at eight. Meeker led 21-18 then stayed composed when they fell behind 21-23, to come back and win the match with a 25-23 win in the third game.According to Atwood, her team’s play was “sluggish.”“We got out-scrapped,” Atwood said of the match against the lady Rams from South Routt County (Soroco played in Oak Creek, which Meeker lost in five games.“They were all close games but we didn’t play our best,” Atwood said.Meeker lost the first game 21-25 and won the next two 25-22 and 27-25 in extra play. The lady Cowboys forced extended play in the final two games but came up short in each, losing 24-26 and 14-16.“We learned a lot, did some self-diagnosis and identified some problems by watching film,” Atwood said of how the team will prepare for county rival Rangely and Plateau Valley.“It’s always fun to play Rangley,” Atwood said. “Dennis (Rohn) is putting a good program together and we are excited for this weekend, we love this challenge.”Meeker will play Rangely at 10 a.m. Saturday, followed by a match with the lady Cowboys from Plateau Valley.
