Black Mountain Theater presents the “The Great Diamond Swindle’’

CRAIG — On Friday, April 11, the community play begins at 7 p.m. On Saturday, April 12, the show begins at 2 p.m. The event is at Craig Middle School. Contact Cindy Chotvacs at 824-6002 for more information or e-mail [email protected]. You can also vist http://www.blackmountaintheatre.org for more information.
In celebration of Craig’s centennial, Black Mountain Theatre will be producing “The Great Diamond Swindle of 1872″ the last of three installments from “Land of Northern Mystery.”
Black Mountain Theatre’s production is inspired by the original by Esther Campbell but we have adapted the story to fit a broader audience with a lot of humorous and funny sequences. This adaptation includes authentic western songs performed live, colorful saloon scenes, rugged outdoor backgrounds and real western flavor! And most of all, lots and lots of diamonds! Arnold and Slack pull off a heist of epic proportions in this tongue-in-cheek rendition! In the spirit of “Blazing Saddles” or “Rustler’s Rhapsody” the group has endeavored to bring the Old West and slapstick together in this comic accounting of one of our best and most famous local legends, “The Great Diamond Swindle of 1872.″
The full history is a local history in three acts detailing the “discovery” of Northwest Colorado, heroes such as Kit Carson and his adventures in Brown’s Park and Fort Davy Crockett, and the great diamond swindle of 1872.
The play was originally written by Esther Campbell in 1958 and performed during Craig’s 50 year celebration. Original actors were made up of members of the Cattleman’s Association and the Cowbells.
