CNCC Corner: CNCC enters its 60th year

Dr. Lisa Jones

This fall has been busy with some exciting events and opportunities at CNCC, and it’s not over yet!

On Oct. 13, 2021, CNCC closed out its 59th year and started its journey forward to the 60th year. In January of 1961, construction of what was then an extension campus of Mesa College began in Rangely, Colorado. Dr. William A. Medesy was named Dean of Rangely College and within months, he began hiring new staff and faculty and construction continued with community support. Every weekend for months, church groups and individual members of the community headed to the hills to collect rocks that now make up CNCC’s distinguishing campus features in Rangely.

Over the next 12 months, we will identify a few times to reflect on the past 59 years, pointing out how they defined who we are as CNCC today. Next fall, we will host an event, open to all members of the CNCC community (family members of years past and present), to celebrate and look ahead to the next 60 years. We would love to hear from you. Please go to our Facebook page; we would love to know your favorite memory, how CNCC helped define your career today, or what you hope will never change about CNCC going into the next 60 years.

CNCC joined 12 other state community colleges last month to explore ways to provide greater opportunities, services, and support for adult learners. This was a daylong event with the first part of the day spent hearing from adult learners and looking at data to understand current needs and obstacles. For the second part of the day, CNCC discussed workforce needs with Craig community leaders and ways to better align course offerings and support for adult learners.

CNCC will host the Scenic West Regional Volleyball tournament this Friday and Saturday (November 5-6) for the first time in the college’s history. Six teams from around the conference will converge in Hefley Gym in Rangely to compete for the conference title and a shot to play in the national tournament. With three of the six teams already ranked nationally in the top 10 it will be an exciting weekend of high-flying action. CNCC volleyball teams kicks off the tournament with play at 10 a.m. against Snow College.
