Atwood, Atoafa stand out at MHS track meet

Juniors Tala Atoafa and Bailey Atwood both improved their career bests and won events in the track meet held in Hotchkiss. Atoafa hopped, skipped and jumped more than three feet better than he ever has to win the triple jump. Atwood improved in both the shot put and discuss to win each event.
MEEKER I Most of the Meeker High School track and field team started their spring break just a little later than the rest of the school, but their sacrifice was well worth it. Members from both the boys’ and girls’ teams had career days.
Two competitors really stood out in terms of improvement this week. For the girls’ team, Bailey Atwood earned first place in both the shot put and the discus, scoring 20 points for the team and improving her previous career bests in both events. On Saturday in the shot put, Bailey was able to gain four feet from her previous career best of 31 feet 11 inches to an astonishing 35-11. The discus was no different, as she improved on her previous mark of 102-8 to an impressive 107-3. Both marks should have her contending for the number one ranking for all 2A females in the state. For the boys’ team the improvement that stood out was Tala Atoafa in the triple jump. He was able to earn first place with his mark of 41-7, vastly improving his previous career mark of 38-3.
The success did not end with these two young athletes. Other noteworthy performances included Toby Casias winning the 100-meter dash with a new season best time of 11.68 seconds. He also placed fourth in the 400-meter dash with his time of 53.83.
The young 4×800 meter relay team of JC Henderson, Caleb Lange, Anthony Watt and Lathrop Hughes were able to earn seventh place in their first outing of the season. The lone girls’ relay team competing in the the 4×100 consisted of Adrienne Wix, Sydney Hughes, Linda Olivas and Aly Ridings earned fifth place.
The relay members did not stop scoring with that race. Wix, running the 400 for the first time this season, placed seventh place. Ridings and Hughes both scored in every event they entered. Ridings earned a first place medal in the 100-meter hurdles with her new career best of 17.55. Hughes was not far behind placing fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. She was also was able to score points in the 300-meter hurdles, placing second and running a new career best. Immediately after competing in the 300 meter hurdles Hughes was able to jump a new career best in the triple jump and place sixth. She was not alone scoring points in the triple jump. Teammate Aly Ridings earned third place, with a new career best and Katie Morgan placed seventh.
The girls were also fortunate to get scoring in the distance events as well. Piper Haney ran to a fifth place finish and a career best of 2:45 in the 800-meter run.
Overall, it was a great day, and there were many exceptional performances not mentioned in this article. If you would like to view further results go to http://co.milesplit.com/teams/MEEK.
