RBC Jr. 4-H Livestock judging teams win Weld County

Members of the RBC 4H Judging Team (left to right): Sam Baylie, Serena Goedert, Macy Collins, Marryn Shults, Mary Baylie, Faith Goedert, Kenzie Turner, Madi Shults. (Not pictured: Maclaine Shults, who was texting or something else more important.)
RBC I The RBC 4-H judging team members went to Greeley and spent Mother’s Day weekend judging livestock. They made the most of it and won the prestigious Weld County Invitational, beating 14 other teams.
This contest is designed to prepare the senior 4-H judges for the state contest in June. Weld County requires the senior contestants to evaluate 12 classes of livestock and present six sets of reasons. The juniors have to judge the 12 classes as well, but they still give the normal three sets of reasons. Consequently, it is a bigger contest and the Weld County organizers gather up impressive prizes. The majority of the junior division awards ended up coming home to Rio Blanco County.
Some who are familiar with the little-known clique of youth showmen and judges around Colorado are aware of the dangerous water contestants tread when they go into Weld County, Colo., and take their stuff off the awards table. Showing and judging is serious business in Weld County. It is actually held in just as high regard as youth athletics.
The irritation is amplified for Weld County participants when the winners are a “sub-species” of Colorado 4-H from the western slope who march up to the pay window and grab the top prizes, which this year included boots and cash. The RBC junior team definitely earned their “P’s” at this one and a couple of “E’s” to boot.
In the junior sheep division Macy Collins placed seventh and Madi Shults finished second.
In hog ìjudgingî Shults took second.
Beef cattle evaluation required junior contestants to evaluate six cattle classes and give a set of performance heifer reasons. Marryn Shults earned her first individual ribbon by finishing eighth. Madi Shults was second.
In placings Collins was tenth and Shults was second, again.
In reasons Collins was tenth and Shults came in first. She was awarded a $250 certificate for a new pair of boots. This is the third pair of boots RBC kids have won this season
Individually Collins came in 10th and Shults was the high individual, winning a $200 cash prize. The junior team won the team division as well. Shults, Collins, Marryn Shults, Kenzie Turner, Mary Baylie, Serena Goedert and Faith Ann Goedert all marked cards.
Maclaine Shults and Sam Baylie judged on the senior side. They got a good work-out and gave reasons on six sets of reasons to at least four officials who will officiate at the state 4-H contest at at Colorado State this month.
Maclaine Shults placed seventh in reasons, eighth in beef and fifth in sheep.
