MEEKER I The Forest Service started working on 300 acres of mechanical fuels treatments on the “Aldrich Lakes Wildlife Habitat Enhancement Project” on Oct. 1. The site for this 300-acre habitat enhancement project is located approximately 19 miles north of Meeker and approximately the same distance south of Craig, Colo., on National Forest System lands. The treatment units are located around the Aldrich Lakes area.
With the support of Colorado Parks and Wildlife, this project has been in the planning stages by the White River National Forest for some time. It involves the use of heavy equipment to chop brush. The goal is to improve wildlife habitat and reduce the amount of fuel accumulated in the area that could contribute to a much more intense fire under critical fire conditions.
This project will take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete and is located adjacent to Aldrich Lakes. Forest Road 252 will remain open to the public and most of the dispersed camps sites in the area will be available for use. Only those places where equipment is working will be temporarily closed to the public.
