MEEKER I “It was the best weather day of the year, which everyone was appreciative of,” Meeker golf pro Jim Cook said of Saturday’s beautiful spring day. “It was a good way to start the season.”
The first tournament of the year was a three-person scramble, which featured 12 competitive teams. Only two shots separated the top four gross scores.
Meeker duffer Lex Collins said he resorted to name-calling to motivate his teammates Bryce Ducey and Pat Walsh on the back nine after shooting a 29 on the front. The team held a one-stroke lead to win the tournament with an eight-under par 60.
Chippers owner Larin Crase, pictured teeing off from the blue tees on No. 1, teamed up with partner Danielle Feola and teammate Kyle Frary to record the best net score in the first tournament of the season.

“I called ‘em a couple of jackasses and it kind of made Bryce mad,” Collins said. “Really. it was those two who won it.”
Collins, Walsh and Ducey held off Irv Griffin and Rod and Ron Kelly Crawford, whose play impressed Cook.
“Ron Kelly was really driving the ball,” Cook said.
Brandan Banducci, Bobby Castaldo and Ted Relihan tied with Andy Coryell, Bill deVergie and Pat Hughes with a gross score of 62, one shot out of the money.
“Local knowledge came into play” on the net side, Cook said.
Larin Crase and Kyle Frary added Danielle Fiola to their team and the trio finished with the best net of 45, three shots ahead of Jeff Asselin, Randy Hall and Wayne Murray.
A 27-hole two-man scramble will be the next tournament, to be played May 18 at the Meeker Golf Course.
