MEEKER I Siblings Eddie Rubin and Amanda Back trailed Mitch Carter and Tami Holt by three shots after 18 holes of play in the annual two-day couples tournament. However, after the second day, the siblings were tied for the lead with Craig Nichols and Maggie Becker and a playoff was needed to determine the winner in the championship flight.
Rubin and Back shot a three-over par 71 the first day and even par the second round to tie with Nichols and Becker, who shot a 72 the first day and one-under-par Sunday, while Carter and Holt led the field of 14 couples. They shot an even par Saturday, but fell behind early Sunday.
Meeker’s Ron Kelly Crawford and his mother, Ellen, who lives in Rangely, teamed up to finish third in the championship flight.
Fergens from Rifle had the best net score (109) in the championship flight and locals George and Peggy Back were second, one shot behind and nine strokes ahead of Terry and Erin Galbreath.
In the second flight, which also featured a field of 14 couples, Rangely’s Rob and Lailanie Morgan led from start to finish. The Morgans shot an 80 Saturday and took a stroke off Sunday to finish with a 159, three shots ahead of Evelyn and Jim Woosley from Moab, Utah. Rod Crawford and Patti Edwards finished third, three shots behind the Woosleys.
Tom and Sherry Rubin finished with the best net score (107) in the second flight. Harry Watt and Pam Sawson had the second best net score and Steve and Serine Webb were third.
The annual Kickoff Classic, benefiting the Meeker High School football team, will be played in a scramble format on Saturday, and the final tournament of the season will be the Old Farts In Carts (OFIC) Seniors’ tournament on Sept. 14.
