Rangely High homecoming filled with fun

RANGELY I Rangely High School students are enjoying homecoming events this week with the theme of “A Hero’s Homecoming.”
Events today kick off three days of activities open to the community in the hopes that local residents will join in the festivities.
“This is our chance to invite the community and graduates back to join us and participate in the climate and culture of the high school,” Principal Barry Swenson said Monday.
This evening, RHS sophomores will host a chili dinner at the WRBM Rec Center kitchen and patio at a cost $5 per person or $20 per family. Following dinner, the annual bonfire will begin at dusk at the old Parkview School site, organized by the junior class. Students in the class have been collecting firewood for a week to ensure a large blaze.
Friday, the day of the homecoming football game, will see the students dressed in green, black and white (and aluminum foil) to show team spirit.
In the morning, the classes will begin decorating their floats, which they need to have completed in time for the parade at 1:30 p.m. The parade will begin at Stanolind Drive on Highway 64 and travel to the Rangely Fire Station.
The class with the best decorated float, windows and hallway along with the most participation in dress up days and activities will win a free trip to Vernal for a movie and pizza.
Sports will follow back at RHS with the freshman volleyball team beginning at 3 p.m., the junior varsity at 4 p.m. and the varsity at 5 p.m. against the West Grand Mustangs.
At 7 p.m., students and the community are urged to cheer the varsity football players as they play under the lights against the West Grand Mustangs as well.
At the games, expect lots of opportunities to support RHS and its students, Swenson said.
“The kids have been really active this week,” Swenson said. “Spirit is way up above three years ago, and it is our hope to keep it up at this level.”
White River Market has donated a $100 gift card to the junior class concessions. If a $5 meal deal is purchased from the concession stands, the buyer’s name will be submitted to win the gift card, which will be awarded at halftime of the football game.
The king and queen of the 2013 homecoming will be announced at the halftime show by the 2013 crown bearers: Halle Harris and Caleb Wiley.
This year’s royalty court includes Mandy Duong and Blade Rose, Tessa Slagle and Lucas Heinle and Aimee Hogan and Cameron Enterline.
This year, the school’s student council voted to honor Irene Rose and the late Vern Rose as homecoming grand marshals.
Corinne Coombs and Landon Rowley were chosen as freshman attendants; sophomore class attendants are Carrie Goddard and Kiki Ruiz; and Stephanie Tuck and Colt Allred are the junior class attendants.
The council came up with creative dress up days for homecoming week. Monday’s theme was accessory day, when students could wear jewelry, hats, sunglasses, key chains and any personal accessory. Tuesday was Duck Dynasty day, when the students dressed in their favorite redneck clothing. Wednesday was superhero and sidekick day.
Today is traditional color day. The seniors will be wearing black, the juniors will wear white while the sophomores will be wearing green.
The freshman class? They get to wear aluminum foil.
And even though there is no school on Friday, students are urged to wear green, black and white as this is spirit day, and they should wear the school colors to the homecoming volleyball and football games to show their Panther spirit.
On Saturday, the homecoming dance will begin at 9 p.m. in the RHS lower commons.
The students and staff at RJ/SHS would like to welcome the friends and families of the community to join them in showing Panther pride by attending the 2013 homecoming events.
