Regional wrestling starts Friday at Del Norte HS

MEEKER | Meeker westling was once again at home — for the final time in 2022 — for the Meeker Duals.

“It was a step back from the meat grinder type tournaments that we have been competing in, even the Center tournament was a step back from what we have been doing, but there were still some tough kids there,” commented assistant coach Stryker Lane.

There were two pools. Pool A consisted of Delta, Hayden, Basalt, Coal Ridge and Meeker Gold.

Cowboys on the Meeker Gold team were Sklar Browning at 106 pounds, Owen Hannemann (120), Dawson Richardson (126), Trinden Powell (160), Teagan Sheridan (182), and Tate Kerchel (220).

Competing in Pool B was Grand Valley, Rangely, Olathe, Soroco and Meeker Black.

Cowboys on the Meeker Black team were Dillon Hobbs (106), Bo Muxlow (113), Trae Kennedy (120), Clay Crawford (126), Ty Goedert (132), Abe Maupin (138), Trevor Keys (145), Connor Blunt (152), Cade Blunt (160), Kelton Turner (170), Brendan Clatterbaugh (182), Judd Harvey (220).

“Our black team won the tournament and Meeker gold ended up ninth,” commented Lane.

Meeker Gold beat Soroco in the finals to take ninth and Meeker Black went 52-24 over grand valley, 72-12 over Olathe, 61-12 over Rangely, 78-6 over Soroco and in the finals 48-21 over Hayden to take first.

“It was a good weekend and we wrestled well and got out what we wanted from it,” said Lane, “and in a dual format we could manage how and who the kids wrestled; we got what we wanted out of it and we are looking good.”

The Cowboys have now entered the post season and are looking forward to regionals. The regional team will be Zeek Gianinetti (106), Muxlow, Kennedy, Crawford, Goedert, Maupin, Jake Blazon (145), Connor, Cade, Turner, Hayden Shults (195), Harvey, and Tanner Musser (HWT).

“We will be going down healthy and ready to wrestle hard; taking 14, a full team to regionals,” wrapped up Lane.

Meeker’s regional tournament will be hosted by Del Norte High School and will begin Friday at 4 p.m., there will be one championship round and two consolation rounds. The tournament will pick back up Saturday at 10 a.m.

As a team the Cowboys are sitting fourth in the rankings across the state and currently have 10 ranked Cowboys: Kennedy is ranked fifth, Crawford (9), Goedert (4), Maupin (12), Connor (2), Cade (9), Turner (2), Clatterbaugh (5), Harvey (3), and Musser (3).
