•  Rules connected with appointments to office are necessarily either elastic or brittle; they must be stretched or broken so often. 

•  Many claim to be praying for the conversion of the world who are not doing anything else. 

•  Wind, cold and April showers were the meteorological features of this week’s weather. 

•  Born—On Easter morning, to Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Clark, a son.

•  That rich, amber-colored life-giving fluid known as bock beer, on tap at the Rio Blanco Sample Rooms. John W. Welch, Proprietor.

•  It is easier to find fault than it is to find a remedy. 

•  Congress and state legislatures are looking for new subjects of taxation. We respectfully suggest these: People who try to use the newspapers to vent their spleen against their personal enemies.

 •  Albert Romey’s new shop in the Meeker hotel was opened Monday. It is probably one of the handsomest and best equipped barber shops (for a small town) in the state.

•  In case you have not noticed, Denver TV has arrived in Meeker. After nearly four years of time and effort spent working in this direction, by many individuals, the end result was accomplished Sunday evening. 

•  R.G. Lyttle was one of a group of Masons who was awarded the KYCH (Knight York Cross of Honor) in Alamosa last Saturday.

•  White River Spas has ceased operations in Meeker. The firm, which started operations in Meeker on March 2, 1995, apparently shut its doors the week of April 13. At its peak, the spa maker employed more than 30 people. Last year, White Water Spas ran into trouble when federal safety regulations slapped the company with substantial fines for an array of safety violations.  

•  Some of the most majestic elk of all time visited Meeker on April 26 and 27  as part of the World Record Elk Tour sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. About 1,300 people showed up at the fairgrounds to ogle some of the largest elk racks ever assembled.

•  Plans were finalized for this year’s Clean-Up week at a regular meeting of the town council Monday night.  

•  Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at the Rangely Municipal Building for the special mill levy election scheduled by the Rangely College governing board.The election is for the purpose of increasing the Rangely College tax levy by six mills. 

 •  The two sites for the prototype oil shale development program in Colorado, announced last week, are both in Rio Blanco County, southeast of Rangely.

•  Rebecca Olree and Brandon Halcomb were crowned during the 1997 RHS Prom on April 26. 

•  The spirit relay teams came through two school records over the past weekend in Rifle. The 4×100 meter relay team of Aaron Parsons, Cole Johnson, Chris Widner and newcomer Steve Kendrick, created the biggest news of the day.
