Barone Middle School seventh-grader Krissie Luce hands the baton to her twin sister Kassie in the 400-meter relay, which they helped their team win at recent meets in Glenwood Springs and Rangely.
The Barone Middle School track team has been very busy over the past two weekends, competing in Glenwood Springs two weekends ago and in Rangely on Saturday.
The Glenwood meet is a large meet with some different events from basic meets, such as the 200-meter hurdles. Meeker did well with the format as the seventh-grade boys and girls both placed third and the eight grade girls were fourth.
The seventh- and eighth-grade girls both won the 400-meter relay, and the seventh-grade boys got third. Sierra Williams not only helped the 8th-grade girls relay team to blue, she won the open 100-meter dash as well as the 400-meter dash.
Avery Watt won the 200-meter hurdles and was third in the 100-meter hurdles and was also a member of the winning 400 meter relay team as well as the second-place 800-Medley team. Riley Pertile was third in the discus.
For the 8th-grade boys, Doak Mantle was third in the 200-meter hurdles and was a member of the 400-meter relay team that was third. Logan Hughes finished sixth in the high jump. Jerrick Garza was third in the high jump and Matt Chitwood was fourth.
The seventh-grade girls were led by the Luce girls as Krissie won the 100-meter hurdles, Kassie was third in the 100-meter dash and both were members of the winning 400-meter relay and second-place 800-meter medley team.
Gracie Bradfield was second in the 200-meter dash, Sydney Main won the high jump with a jump of 4-feet, 3-inches, and Megan Shelton was second in the 400-meter dash as well as first in the shot put, and she was a member of the relay teams.
For the 7th-grade boys, Brennan Jensen was third in the high jump, Kale Burke was second in the 800-meter run and Pake Burke was fourth. Gavin Garr was third in the 400-meter dash, Eli Hanks won the shot put and Miquel Lopez was second.
Head coach Heather Burke was pleased with the team’s performance and saw several personal bests set in Glenwood as well as Rangely.
In Rangely, the relay teams as well as several individuals had an outstanding day. The eighth-grade girls were led again by Sierra Williams and Avery Watt. Sierra placed second in the 100-meter dash as well as the 400-meter dash and she anchored the winning 400-meter relay.
Avery Watt was second in the 100-meter hurdles and a member of the winning medley and 400-meter relays. Other members of the eighth-grade relay team were Kiyoko Thelen, Josie Drussel and Taylor Dodds.
Doak Mantle was third in the 100-meter dash for the eighth grade boys, and Logan Hughes was third in the long jump. Jerrick Garza was second in the high jump.
The seventh grade boys were led by Eli Hanks, who won the shot put and discus as well as placed second in the 100-meter dash. Kale Burke won the 800-meter dash with a gutsy run.
The seventh-grade girls won the 800 medley relay with the team of Gracie Bradfield, Kassie Luce, Megan Shelton and Sydney Main. Kassie Luce won the 100-meter hurdles and was the anchor for the 400-meter relay team that again placed first. She rounded out her four-blue-ribbon day winning the 200-meter dash.
Krissie Luce was second in the 100-meter dash. Sydney Main was second in the high jump and Megan Shelton was on the 400-meter relay team, the medley relay team and was second in the shot put.
There were several other members of the teams who placed in events, and certainly had outstanding meets.
The team continues to show great improvement. Heather Burke is joined by Marty Casey, and newcomer Brittany Shubnell.
The participants and coaches have enjoyed the days of warm weather and endured the cold days to simply keep working hard. They look forward to a meet in Baggs, Wyo., this weekend.
