The dual peaks of Mt. Sopris held an ever watchful gaze over the competitors of the Demon Invitational this past Saturday, as Glenwood Springs hosted six teams at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus.
A new venue this year, the course consisted of grass, asphalt, gravel, and single track trails, and included a sustained climb in the latter portion of the race. Brighton Bair had an excellent start in the girls race, kept a solid pace throughout, and finished the race third overall, in a time of 24:22. Haylee Steele continues to show improvements in her racing, with a 31:06 and 41st place. In the boys race, Wyatt Rollins was the first Cowboy to cross the line, in 12th place, at 21:45. Gabe Smithers was just under a minute behind, at 22:42, to take 23rd. Gage Richardson, in 26th place, ran the course in 23:05. Our fourth and fifth scorers this week were Aidan Tapia and Oliver Holmes, running in 23:29 and 24:27 respectively, for 37th and 41st places. Cameron Hanberg took 57th place, in 29:22. “It was exciting to see a new course this year, especially one that I feel represents what cross country should be in Colorado. Epic views, and terrain to match. My kids, however, may have different opinions!” said head coach Marty Casey, Meeker will be competing in Moffat County at Loudy Simpson Park on Saturday morning, with middle school races starting at 8:45 a.m., and high school races at 9:45 a.m.
