MEEKER I Two scramble golf tournaments were recently held on the Meeker Golf Course: Berry Brothers’ annual company tournament, and the men’s two-man scramble was played the next day, May 18.

“We were very fortunate to have golfers from numerous courses around northwest Colorado and three players from Utah,” Chris Arnold, Meeker’s golf superintendent said of the field in the two-man scramble. “The A-flight was packed with talent and Robby Elam and Bryce Ducey prevailed over some very tough players.”
Elam and Ducey won the 27-hole tournament with an eight-under par 94 to win the A-flight, one shot better than John and Jeb Savage, who’s home courses are Book Cliff Country Club in Grand Junction and Rifle, respectively.

Meeker’s Clint Chappell and George Back, above right, won the B-flight in a field of 10 teams. The Ladies Deerfly tournament will be held June 7.

Both teams shot a five-under-par 29 on the first nine but Elam and Ducey only added two strokes on the second nine, while the Savages added three, then both teams shot par golf on the final nine.
Former Meeker golf pro Dennis Rohn, who now lives in Utah, teamed up with Bob Heilman and finished with the best net score (89) in the A-flight. Meeker’s J.C. Watt and Willy Theos were given second net, one shot back.
“The B-flight was very competitive as well, and 27 holes of tournament golf on a warm, windy day, can take it out of you,” Arnold said.
Ten teams made up the field in the B-flight and Meeker’s George Back and Clint Chappell were the best golfers in the flight, shooting a 104 to win, one shot better than Donnie McPherson and Irv Griffin, also Meeker golfers.
Randy Hall and Wayne Murray, who listed Adobe Creek as his home course, had the best net score (99) in the B-flight, giving Don Blazon and Shiloh May second with a net score of 102.
“We really appreciate the big turnout and hope our future tournaments can be as fun,” Arnold said.
The next tournament on the Meeker Golf Course will be the Ladies Deerfly, on June 7.
