MEEKER I Rifle’s Kenda Spaulding and Battlement Mesa’s Britt Choate teamed up to win the annual Ladies’ Deer Fly Scramble, held at the Meeker Golf Course June 7, but Meeker’s Peggy Back and Patty Edwards represented the local course well, finishing with the best net score in the event.

“The Ladies’ Deer Fly Scramble had perfect weather and a field of five teams from nearby towns, as well as seven teams from Meeker, to play some great golf,” Meeker golf superintendent Chris Arnold said. “Kendra Spaulding and Britt Choate played an outstanding 18 holes of golf as did Peggy Back and Patty Edwards.”
Spaulding and Choate shot an even par 68 to win the 18-hole tournament, shooting one-under par on the first nine and one-over par on the back, five shots ahead of Back and Edwards. The local team shot three-over par on the front nine and took a shot less to complete the back nine to win the tournament with a net score of 47.
Pam Ruzicka and Mic Zywiec of Glenwood Springs took second-place honors with a gross score of 77. Annette Frnata and Kristi Shelton, also of Glenwood Springs, placed second with a net score of 49 to round out the top places.
Susie Sprod and Irene Kilbane won the “Closest to the Pin” contests.
“All the teams played well, and the net competition was extremely tight,” Arnold said. “It was a fun tournament event, and the course will be hosting more.”
The Meeker Golf Course will be busy this weekend, starting with the annual White River golf tournament on Friday sponsored by White River Electric Association, and the Two-man Best-ball tournament, sponsored by Marvine Ranch, will be played Saturday and Sunday.
“Come up and watch some great golf this weekend,” Arnold said.
