MEEKER | The Nature Conservancy in Colorado announced the award of a $25,000 grant to the White River Alliance to plan and host a workshop in fall of 2023 in partnership with American Rivers, RiversEdge West, and the White River BLM. The workshop will be designed to share useful tools and practices with the public and area landowners to cost effectively restore stream corridors. With a focus on the impacts of long-term drought and water shortage, the workshop will focus on practical, low-tech ways to reduce erosion and slow the water in high desert riverscapes.
Jennifer Wellman, the Freshwater Project Director for The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, shared a presentation on potential workshop topics that highlight benefits of nature-based solutions including beaver dam analogs and rock structures to slow the velocity of water, trap sediment, and improve drought resilience in tributary streams to the White River. A committee was formed to advance the development of a community-driven workshop and Shawn Welder, the White River Alliance president, invited any member of the public who would like to learn more or be involved to contact the organization.
