MEEKER I Macy Collins of Meeker attended the Junior National Shorthorn Show and Conference in Louisville, Ky., the week of June 23-28, establishing quite a bit of success in several competitions.

While there, Collins competed against more than 450 juniors with her heifers and in several other contests. There were three juniors from Colorado in attendance.
Each day consisted of contests and activities, and the group started out the week with a parade of states with the Maine-Anjou and Chianina participants, too.
Collins started out the week in the livestock judging and showmanship contests, which had more than 150 intermediates in her age group.
She also entered projects in the photography and arts and crafts contests.
She gave a speech on the topic of grass-fed beef versus grain-fed beef, placing fifth in her age division and receiving a stone plaque.
Next, she teamed up with Elizabeth Fleming of Michigan to participate in the team sales competition. Teams were to market and sell an antibiotic to the judges. This required a lot of preparation and practice.
The girls where the only team that consisted of juniors from different states. They completed their research and collaborated through email, texts and Google, and their hard work paid off as they received second place out of 22 teams. They each received a stone plaque and $25 cash as well.
Collins again teamed up with Fleming and her younger sister (who had to move up an age group) to compete in the team fitting competition. In this contest, a team of three juniors has 20 minutes to fit a heifer for show.
The girls placed fourth out of 20 very-competitive teams, and each one received a bag full of fitting supplies donated by Sullivan Show Supply.
On Saturday, Collins showed her heifer. There were more than 750 head of cattle competing in the show, and Collins’ heifer “Viv” placed fourth in her class of winter heifers.
