MEEKER I Many members of the Meeker High School football team have been gathering in Starbuck Stadium every Monday and Thursday this summer in preparation of the 2014 season.
“We’ve have been lifting and throwing the ball all summer,” head coach Shane Phelan said. “We are excited to get things going.”
The Cowboys played in a seven-on-seven camp July 26 in Grand Junction. They will host a little kids camp Aug. 8 then officially start practice Aug. 11. Free physicals, which are required to participate, will be offered at Pioneers Medical Center July 29 and Aug. 7. The Cowboys will host the annual Cowboy Kickoff Classic Golf Tournament on Aug. 16.
“It was a good camp,” coach Phelan said of the camp in Grand Junction, where they played teams from Grand Junction, Fruita, Rifle and Montrose. “They were all bigger schools and played a little faster than we are accustomed to.”
Coach Phelan said the little kids camp will be held on the junior high practice field Aug. 8.
Teams are randomly selected for the Cowboy Kickoff Classic, a four-person scramble format 18-hole golf tournament, which will start at 1 p.m. All proceeds benefit the Meeker High School football program. Please call 878-5642 to sign up for the tournament.
