LETTERS TO THE EDITOR – June 27th, 2024

Thanks to voters and concession of the race

Dear Editor:

Thank you so much to all of you that supported me through this RBC Commissioner campaign. It has been a real pleasure to see all of you that have stood behind me and my abilities. I learned a lot over the last 3 months. I met new people and renewed old relationships. I enjoyed getting in depth into some of our counties challenging issues and having meaningful discussions with many of you.

I have so many people to thank. First, Michele, my campaign director – she worked hard at keeping my schedule (and me) on track. She began referring to me as her, “rogue candidate”, I’m not entirely sure why. Additionally, my parents, Gus and Christine Halandras and Melinda Parker; they have been there every step of the way, wherever they could fit in and help. My thanks go out to Jeff LeBleu. He was my support system in Rangely and indispensable in helping me be known there. This group accomplished quite a bit in a short amount of time.

There is another group of you who helped us keep our process straight; your answers, to the multitude of our questions, was always the best advice. There are a few in this group that we would like to give special thanks, for not screening our calls or texts, you know who you are, and we apologize for the volume.

Additionally, a huge thank you to the monetary supporters who believed enough to give financially. It afforded us the opportunity to get my message out.

Then, there are all of you who voted for me. It is your support that kept me moving forward throughout the entire process. Your faith in me has been truly inspiring; a great feeling. I also want to thank Callie Scritchfield for stepping up and running as a candidate for RBC Commissioner. It is no small thing to run for public office and it is always good to have more than one candidate in the race so the voters can decide. In this instance we not only had two candidates, but I believe we had two good candidates, so, thank you Callie.

Now, as we move forward your decision has set our future in motion. I wish Callie all the luck in her new job.  I believe she will do her best to represent us and Rio Blanco County on all fronts. I look forward to seeing how your choice becomes our future.

In the meantime, you will still find me taking care of our communities.  I will be out helping our local organizations keep our county great. While I may not be in the office, I will still be there as a constant presence representing our wishes and desires to continue the presence of Rio Blanco County. You know where to find me …..

Kindness of strangers

Dear Editor:

There are a million reasons to love Meeker, but the kindness of strangers is one. We recently had a funeral for a dear lady whose family came in from another state so that she could be buried next to her husband at Highland Cemetery. She had a traditional burial and a beautiful casket, however, as she was 100, there were not a lot of people at the service. The local police officers were asked to do an escort at the last minute. And I asked if they might consider being pallbearers. I asked just one, but by the time we got up there were three fine young men in uniform ready, willing and able to help us lay that sweet lady to rest. Thank you to the officers who stepped up. You are one of the reasons our community is so great.

On patriotism

Dear Editor:

July 4 got me to thinking about patriotism and what it is. I know it does not have a color, religion, political party or gender. So is it covering your heart when the flag goes by in a parade or at the opening of a sports event? Or do you cover your heart when you pass by a flying flag? Do you

display the flag at your home or business? Is it saying the pledge of allegiance at the start of a government meeting? When the Star Spangled Banner is played do you just listen or sing along? Are you patriotic if you help out your fellow Americans when they need it? What is patriotism? Fortunately, we live in a country where you have the freedom to choose how you feel and how you display your patriotism.
