Rust continues forward progress with prized Catch-a-Calf steer

MEEKER | As the summer progresses and August approaches, Johnny Rust, a dedicated participant in the National Western Stock Show’s Catch-a-Calf program, continues to make significant strides with his prized steer.

Since successfully catching his calf this last January, Rust has devoted himself to the daily care and training of his steer, resulting in noticeable weight gain and appearance that reflects his diligent efforts.

His journey with his steer has been more than just a project; it’s become a passion that extends into the competitive world of livestock shows. Attending jackpots and clinics, Rust refines his skills in showmanship and gains valuable insights from experienced exhibitors. This hands-on experience not only enhances his understanding of livestock management but also prepares him for the upcoming challenges at the county fair.

On Aug. 2 at 5 p.m., Rust will proudly present his hard work and dedication at the county fair. The event begins with the dairy show, followed by the market competitions where he invites friends, family, and the community to support him as he showcases his steer.

But Rust’s journey doesn’t end there. Following the county fair, he will embark on another exciting chapter in his Catch-a-Calf adventure. At the end of August, he will travel to the state fair to compete against other participants from across the region. This competition not only provides Johnny with an opportunity to showcase his skills on a larger stage but also allows him to learn from and connect with fellow young livestock enthusiasts.

Looking ahead, Rust’s ultimate goal is the National Western Stock Show’s final Catch-a-Calf event in January. This prestigious event will mark the culmination of his project, where he will present his steer alongside other dedicated participants from around the country.

In addition to his steer, Rust will also exhibit his goats on Wednesday and his sheep on Thursday at the county fair. These showcases highlight his versatility and commitment to the agricultural community, showcasing his diverse range of livestock expertise.

For those interested in supporting Rust and the livestock community further, the livestock sale on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. provides an opportunity to acquire top-quality animals while supporting the efforts of young exhibitors.

Rust’s journey from catching a calf at the National Western Stock Show to preparing for the county and state fairs has been a testament to his growth, dedication, and passion for agriculture. His enthusiasm shines through in every aspect of his preparation and participation, reflecting his deep commitment to caring for and showcasing his animals.
