Several Meeker residents representing the Meeker Chamber of Commerce and the Meeker VFW Post were in Fort Collins Sept. 11 to accept the award for the “Rio Blanco County Veterans Memorial,” which won the Best Small Town Public Space Project in a statewide contest sponsored by Downtown Colorado Inc., and the Governor’s Awards for Downtown Excellence.
From left to right, for the award presentation, were: John Plakorus of the Colorado Housing Finance Administration; David Cole, commander of the Kingman VFW Post; Michael Short of the, Downtown Fort Collins Business Association; Tom Kilduff of the Meeker VFW; Chantal Unfug of the Governor’s Office; Joe Dungan of the Meeker VFW Post; author John Norquist; and Katherine Correll of Downtown Colorado Inc. The statue, titled “Sacrifice and Resolution,” was sculpted by Meeker artist John Kobald and was dedicated July 4, 2013. Not pictured is Meeker Chamber Vice President Wendy Guiterrez, who also made the trip.
