High school football is back!

MEEKER | This Friday kicks off the 2024 season for the Meeker Cowboy Football team coached by Andy Coryell and assisted by Darby Finley, Matt Dupire, Matt Scott and Peter Doan.

The team traveled west to the Rangely Panthers last Saturday for a county scrimmage.

“I think our scrimmage in Rangely on Saturday was successful, and the kids were excited to practice against someone different,” said Coryell.

The Cowboys have six seniors this year, Cade Blunt, Skylar Browning, Clay Crawford, Finley Deming, Zeke Gianinetti and Tyler Sanders.

“Our class sizes are smaller than they have been, so we’ll have a lot of younger guys getting a lot of varsity minutes,” commented Coryell.

The young age may be considered a rebuilding year after losing 18 seniors, but come a couple years from now the kids will be very experienced.

The 1A Western Slope League looks a little different for the next two year cycle, it’s now Grand Valley, North Fork, Cedaredge, Roaring Fork, Olathe and the Cowboys. Buena Vista was moved to a different league and Gunnison moved up to 2A.

Meeker opens with a very good Centauri team this Friday at home.

“We’re excited to get going,” wrapped up Coryell.

Game time is 7 p.m.
