MEEKER | Last Friday, the Meeker Cowboys boys basketball team hosted the Grand Valley Cardinals. Meeker entered the game with an 0-6 record for the season, hoping to secure their first win against the 2-7 Cardinals. Unfortunately, the night didn’t go as planned, and the Cowboys fell 66-39. Head Coach Klark Kindler shared his thoughts after the game.
“We had too many turnovers in the 2nd quarter and couldn’t recover,” Kindler stated.
At the end of the first quarter, the Cowboys trailed by nine points, with the score at 19-10. The second quarter proved even more challenging, as Meeker added just two points while Grand Valley extended their lead with 15 points. By halftime, the score was 34-12. When asked about potential improvements compared to earlier games, Coach Kindler noted the challenges of evaluating progress.
“It’s hard to say. We were without two starters, so that was tough,” Kindler explained.
The loss pushed the Cowboys’ record to 0-7 on the 2024-2025 season.
The following day, Meeker traveled to Cedaredge to face the Bruins. In a close and heartbreaking game, the Cowboys fell just short, losing 40-38. Coach Kindler expressed mixed emotions about the performance.
“We had plenty of chances to win. I was proud of the effort,” he said.
Senior Josh Scott of Cedaredge was a key factor, contributing 10 points and eight rebounds, while teammate Brady Cooper added eight points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Despite the loss, Kindler highlighted the resilience of his players.
“We were without two starters and had some kids fill in for them really well,” Kindler remarked.
The loss dropped Meeker’s record to 0-8. Looking ahead, the Cowboys will travel to Rangely on Tuesday to take on the Panthers, who hold a 5-6 record. Meeker hopes to secure their first win of the season during the matchup. Coach Kindler emphasized the importance of health and readiness for the upcoming game.
“Hopefully we will be healthy, and that will help a lot,” he stated.
Later in the week, the Cowboys will face a busy schedule. They will travel to Olathe to take on the Olathe Pirates, with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m. and the varsity game at 7 p.m. The following day, Meeker will head to Gunnison to face the Gunnison Cowboys, with junior varsity tipping off at 11 a.m. and varsity at 2 p.m. Good luck to the Cowboys as they look to turn their season around.
