Meeker

New director for Meeker Food Bank

MEEKER |  Meeker Food Bank was started in the 1980’s by the Methodist Church but has become a vital community effort through the years. Donations from caring businesses and individuals in the area and generous time from volunteers has kept it open and functioning continuous through these last 40 years.

In 2014, Cindy Nelson took over the director position from Vicky Johnson who had faithfully championed the organization for many years. Now, 10 years later, after a brilliant leadership tenure, Cindy is turning over the position to Lisa Moffitt. Lisa has been active in our community for many years and brings admirable organizational skill sets and a passion to help people.

Since food insecurity has significantly increased in our area in the past four years, the Meeker Food Bank has done it’s best to keep pace with the growing need to supplement non perishable food and when available – meat, for the families who are in need. They emphasize, anyone could face a financial crisis that results in a food shortage and those people who live here locally are welcome to come and benefit from the resources they offer. However, the food bank has always been designed to “fill the gap” when a crisis occurs and was never created to be a permanent grocery store. Guidelines are in place to make sure everyone is served and the system is not abused.

Currently, the Food Bank of Meeker is open every Wednesday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. If there’s a food emergency, call the church office to be connected to a volunteer: 970-878-5904.
