MEEKER | The Meeker Cowboys girls wrestling team made history last weekend by hosting its first-ever tournament at Meeker High School. The event featured six visiting teams, with Meeker as the seventh competitor.
Five wrestlers competed for the Cowboys on Saturday, all of whom earned placements. The team finished second overall with 59 points.
Hayden Garcia (155 pounds) and Ruth LeBlanc (170 pounds) led the way, each winning first place in their respective weight classes. Abigail Amick placed second at 145 pounds, Emma Ford took third at 130 pounds, and Lucille Munger finished fourth at 125 pounds.
Head coach Barny LeBlanc praised the team’s growth and performance throughout the season.
“This weekend was a great tune-up for regionals, and every lady has progressed excellently this season,” LeBlanc said. “Everyone won positions in each match that they wrestled.”
The Cowboys will travel to Gunnison this weekend for the regional tournament, which takes place Friday and Saturday. The event will determine which wrestlers advance to next weekend’s state championship at Ball Arena in Denver.
Aurora Stallings, ranked ninth in the 235-pound weight class for 4A Region 2, and Ruth LeBlanc, currently ranked eighth at 170 pounds, are key athletes to watch.
“We’re focusing on cleaning up the little details in a few positions where we are struggling,” LeBlanc said. “I’m really impressed with how the ladies have picked up neutral position wrestling. They are building an amazing team atmosphere and are so supportive of one another. This has been some of the most fun I’ve had coaching. Praise God for how they’ve come along and honored God with their hard work!”
Good luck to the Lady Cowboys as they prepare for the regional tournament. Go Cowboys!
