MEEKER | The Meeker High School baseball team kicked off its 2025 season this past Tuesday, hosting the Battle Mountain Huskies for a doubleheader at Paintbrush Park.
The Cowboys are led by returning seniors: No. 2 Finley Deming, No. 6 Carson Klinzmann, No. 8 Cooper Arnold, No. 12 Alan Rivera, No. 33 Skylar Browning, and No. 66 Wil Schwartz. Senior Skylar Browning shared his hopes for leaving a lasting impact on the program this season.
“I hope that the work I’ve put in over these four years leads to success this season and success for the program in the future by sharing the love of the game with underclassmen,” Browning said.
Meeker enters the season under new leadership, with head coach James Romansky taking over the program. He will be helped and assisted by coach Michael Portillo. Last season, the Cowboys finished with a 16-9 overall record, going 4-0 in league play to win the Class 2A Western Slope League title. With a strong group of returning players, the team aims to build on that success.
Battle Mountain entered Tuesday night’s matchup with a 1-1 record. The Huskies opened their season with a 14-2 loss to Denver South on March 11 before bouncing back with a 9-7 win over Grand Valley on March 13th. Meeker, meanwhile, was set to play its first game on the road two weeks ago against Coal Ridge High School on March 14, but was canceled due to the weather. They will be eager to get out onto the field on Tuesday night and get the win in front of their home crowd.
Heading into the opener, senior Finley Deming expressed his excitement for the season.
“I’m excited to see where our hard work takes us and see the younger players step up and play at a varsity level,” Deming said.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys will hit the road this weekend for a tournament in Gunnison, where they will play on Friday and Saturday.
Good luck to the Cowboys as they begin a new season, and as always go Cowboys!
