Cowboys have rough start to 2025 season

MEEKER | The Meeker High School baseball team opened its 2025 season last week with a tough doubleheader against Battle Mountain at home. The Cowboys struggled in both games, falling 11-0 in seven innings in the opener and 15-0 in five innings in the second game.

In the first game, Meeker posted a .160 batting average, a .192 on-base percentage, and a 7.00 earned run average. The second game saw a further decline, with a .083 batting average and a .312 on-base percentage, though the team managed one stolen base. The matchup marked the first time the two teams had met since April 2022, when Meeker secured a win. Tuesday’s victories gave Battle Mountain a 2-1 record against the Cowboys.

New head coach James Romansky acknowledged the difficulties of the season opener. “By the numbers, we’re a young team, we’re adjusting to a new program, and we’ve only been outside on the field for two practices.” With the losses, Meeker started the season 0-2. The Cowboys quickly returned to action over the weekend, traveling to Gunnison for to play Battle Mountain again.

The Cowboys kept the game competitive but still fell short, losing 4-2. The close game marked their narrowest defeat since March 26, 2024. Meeker recorded a .269 on-base percentage, three stolen bases, and a 4.00 earned run average. The loss dropped their record to 0-3.

That night, Meeker took on Gunnison but struggled again, falling 15-5. Despite the loss, the Cowboys scored their most runs of the season. Sophomore Said Rodriguez went 1-for-2, scoring two runs and stealing a base. While senior Finley Deming finished 1-for-3 with a run and a stolen base.

The Cowboys’ losing streak continued as they dropped to 0-4. Romansky remained optimistic about the team’s potential as he talked about the earlier double header against Battle Mountain this week and what he hopes his team can take with them in their matchup against Salida.

“There was a lot of good in this doubleheader. Our infield made routine plays, dove for ground balls, and put competitive throws to first,” he said. “Our pitching was on the plate with good sequencing and few walks. Most importantly, they stayed hungry. We need to carry over those successes and work on the aspects where we’ve got some rust.”

The Cowboys closed out the tournament against Salida but suffered another loss, 13-2. Senior Cooper Arnold led the Cowboys at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double.

Romansky emphasized the need for patience as the team adjusts to his coaching system.

The Cowboys return home this weekend to host Cedaredge at Paintbrush Park at 11 a.m. Saturday.
