CNCC: College, partners mark America 250/Colorado 150 anniversaries

Special to the HT

RBC | This year, two historic milestones will take center stage across the state: the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 150th anniversary of Colorado. From the Governor’s Office to the Colorado General Assembly, leaders are mobilizing communities to commemorate these landmark anniversaries — and Northwest Colorado is ready to answer the call.

Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC), in partnership with the Town of Rangely, the City of Craig, local museums, and community organizations, is planning a year-long series of events to honor the region’s rich heritage while inspiring conversations about its future.

Honoring Service and Sacrifice

The celebration begins in May 2026, during National Military Appreciation Month. CNCC will honor the legacy of the Colorado Buffalo Soldiers with a special viewing of an interview featuring John Bell, President and CEO of the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West and a descendant of a Buffalo Soldier. The program will highlight the courage and contributions of African American soldiers who served on the western frontier.

“Walter Day” Brings History to Life

On July 3, 2026, families are invited to step into the past during “Walter Day,” a day of food, fun, and dinosaur-themed activities.

9 a.m. – Noon: The Rangely Outdoor Museum will unveil a Walter kiosk and statue.

3 – 5 p.m.: Festivities continue at the Craig Administrative Building and grounds.

The day promises interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences designed to make local history accessible and exciting for all ages.

Remembering the Domínguez–
Escalante Expedition

In September, the focus turns to exploration and early Western history.

Sept. 6, 2026: The Rangely Outdoor Museum will unveil a new Domínguez–Escalante exhibit.

Sept. 7, 2026: As part of Septemberfest, parade participants will honor the historic Domínguez–Escalante expedition with horses, reenactors in period dress, and themed displays celebrating the explorers’ journey through the region.

Celebrating CNCC’s Legacy

On Oct. 13, 2026, CNCC will mark Founders Day by honoring the college’s past presidents and their lasting contributions to higher education in Northwest Colorado.

Honoring Early Educators

November will shine a spotlight on the pioneers of education during National Education Month.

Two special exhibits will be on display throughout the month:

“Lighting the Prairie: Caroline Elvira Blakeslee Hill and the First Classroom in Rangely” in Rector Hall

“Katherine L. Craig: First Educator of Craig” in the CNCC Library, located in the Administration Building

On Tuesday, Nov. 10, 2026, family members and guest speakers will present on the lives and legacies of these trailblazing educators, whose dedication helped shape the region’s earliest classrooms.

A Community Celebration

Organizers emphasize that these events are designed not only to commemorate the past, but also to bring the community together in meaningful ways. Residents are encouraged to participate, volunteer, and contribute artifacts or financial support to help make the celebrations memorable.
