Meeker bats come alive in Steamboat sweep, top Rangely

MEEKER |  Last week, the Meeker High School baseball team opened play on the road at Steamboat on April 29, 2026, in a doubleheader against the Sailors.

Meeker opened the series with a 20-4 win behind a balanced offensive attack. Junior Said Rodriguez powered the lineup with a home run, four RBIs and four runs scored, while junior Cade Mills and senior Augie Halstead each drove in multiple runs.

The Cowboys continued their offensive surge in Game 2, rolling to another 20-4 victory behind 21 hits. Junior Heriberto Lopez led the effort with a 5-for-6 performance, while sophomore Hoyt Garcia added three hits. Mills, Rodriguez and Jaxen Mills each contributed multi-hit games as Meeker combined for 42 runs across the doubleheader.

Lopez said his success at the plate came from keeping things simple.

“What was working for me at the plate was not overthinking the situation, just be confident in myself and remembering that I know I can hit the ball,” Lopez said.

The momentum slowed to close the week.

To begin the new month of May on May 1, 2026, the Cowboys fell to Coal Ridge at home, 6-2, managing five hits while striking out nine times. Rodriguez scored both runs, while Mills, Garcia, Jaxen Mills and Lopez each recorded a hit. Coal Ridge built an early lead with six runs in the first three innings. Augie Halstead took the loss on the mound, while Logan Selby provided four scoreless innings of relief.

Meeker closed the stretch with a 12-4 loss to Cedaredge at home on May 2. Despite the result, the Cowboys finished with 10 hits. Mills went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Wesley Thompson added three hits. Logan Selby contributed a hit and a run scored.

Meeker used aggressive baserunning to generate pressure, finishing with six stolen bases, including two each from Thompson, Mills and Selby. Cedaredge capitalized on early opportunities, scoring 12 runs on 10 hits while drawing six walks. The Cowboys committed five errors defensively.

On the mound, Gavin Allen started and allowed four runs in the first inning. Mills worked five innings in relief, allowing six runs, four earned, while striking out five. Jaxen Mills added an inning of relief.

Earlier this week, Meeker hosted county rival Rangely on May 4. The Cowboys defeated the Panthers 13-2 after previously earning a 10-8 road win on March 31. Meeker again came out on top, using a balanced offensive effort and solid pitching.

The Cowboys scored 13 runs on eight hits while taking advantage of five walks and five reached-on-error opportunities. Logan Selby led the way at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Mills added a hit and three RBIs, while Halstead finished with a hit and two RBIs. Hoyt Garcia and Gavin Allen each contributed a hit and scored multiple runs, and Heriberto Lopez added a hit and an RBI.

Meeker remained aggressive on the bases with seven stolen bases, including two from Josh Quinn. Lopez started on the mound, pitching five innings and allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five. Defensively, Meeker committed just one error and finished with a .952 fielding percentage.

With the win, the Cowboys improved to 5-11-1 overall and 2-5 in league play.

Meeker will travel to Grand Valley on May 5 for a 3 p.m. game before returning home to face Olathe on May 8 at 2 p.m. The Cowboys previously fell to Olathe 4-3 earlier this season.

Meeker will wrap up the week on the road at North Fork on May 9 at 11 a.m., seeking to improve on a 7-5 loss earlier this year.
