Both high schools hold commencement this weekend

RBC I This will be a busy weekend for high school graduations in Rio Blanco County as 38 students will be graduated from Meeker High School on Saturday morning and 29 Rangely High School graduates will receive their diplomas on Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday at 10 a.m. at Meeker High School’s Starbuck Stadium, MHS will graduate the Class of 2015.
Valedictorians are Brittany Smith and Reagan Pearce, and salutatorians are Jamie McLaughlin and Sydney Hughes.
Receiving the mantle for the junior class will be Faith Patterson and senior McKenna Kummer will give a singing performance.
The commencement speaker, chosen by the graduating class, will be language arts teacher and 1973 MHS graduate Kathleen Sullivan Kelley.
A reception will follow the graduation ceremony in the auxiliary gym at the high school.
Today at 8 a.m., MHS seniors will practice their graduation ceremony, and graduation photos will be taken at 9 a.m.
At 10 a.m., seniors will have brunch with the Meeker Board of Education.
At 11 a.m. at the senior assembly, the soon-to-be graduates will take the stage in the auditorium to tell stories about the history of their class. At that time, the junior class will be promoted to senior seating.
At 7 p.m. today, the baccalaureate will be held at the high school auditorium.
On Sunday, 29 Rangely High School seniors will walk the graduation aisle for their commencement exercises, the second consecutive year the ceremony has fallen on Memorial Day weekend.
The event begins at 2 p.m. in the school’s upper gymnasium.
Ducey’s Electric owner Alan Ducey will deliver the keynote address, along with speeches by Class of 2015 valedictorian Ethan Allred and salutatorian Mitchell Webber.
The Rangely High School Alumni Teacher’s Choice Award will be announced as will top placers in the composite score and individual categories of the ACT. The senior class College Scholar will also be recognized.
Scholarships to be awarded include those by: the Douglas B. Chapman Family Giving Fund; W.C. Striegel Inc.; the Rangely Elks Club; Epsilon Chi; Julius and Lomelle Poole; Stewart Welding; the families of Sarah Nicole Huitt and Bob Arthur; the Masons; Rangely District Hospital (Dr. Puls and Dr. Short/Western Fuels); Colorado Northwestern Community College (CNCC); and the Moon Lake Electric Association.
Graduates will present a slideshow and students’ parents and guardians and retirees from the Rangely School District will be recognized.
RHS Principal Dr. K.D. Bryant will present the class, RE-4 Superintendent Matt Scoggins will accept it and the Rangely District School Board will present student diplomas.
Students attending college in the fall will go on to CNCC, Colorado Mesa University, the University of Wyoming, the University of Cedarville, Snow College, Utah State University (Logan), Adams State University and Central College in Pella, Iowa. Others will join the workforce or the military.
