MEEKER I The Meeker High School softball season is well underway and the lady Cowboys have shown that they are meant to be with the varsity teams, despite having an extremely tough schedule. The Meeker girls had their first home game last weekend. Rifle came to town with a very competitive, experienced 4A ball club.
The young Meeker team did not back down behind the outstanding pitching of Torri Lasker and a variety of team defensive plays including several incredible stops by third basemen Emily Hendershot, as well as a huge stop in the last inning by Taylor Dodds at second base to create third out. Meeker was aggressive offensively with big hits and several steals. The team is led in steals by Sierra Williams who is also among the top in the state in stolen bases.
The game was close throughout and Meeker trailed by one in the sixth when Jasmine Peterson hit a solo home run tying the game. Megan Shelton relieved Tori on the mound and not only threw the ball well but made great defensive plays to send the game to an extra inning. The team came out in the bottom of the eighth with the game tied and got two people on base and Megan Shelton had the game winning hit bringing in the winning run.
Meeker went to Denver over the weekend and played in a tournament with large school from the metropolitan area. They held their own and won one game.
