MEEKER I The Meeker High School Student Council is in charge of Homecoming Week, which begins Monday, and, according to MHS Head Girl Madeline Amack, co-president of the council, big plans are in the works. The theme for the whole week is “Sci-Fi!”

Monday is “Marvel Monday.” At 7 p.m., the Peach Fuzz will take place wherein teams of high school boys will compete in volleyball. All high school boys are invited to sign up that day in the principal’s office to participate. All community members are invited to attend the games in the main gym.
Tuesday will be relatively quiet. Presumably, teachers will be teaching and students will be learning. However, the girls’ regional varsity softball team will play a double-header at home versus Aspen at 4 and 6 p.m. The girls’ volleyball teams are also home against Grand Valley, C team at 4:30, junior varsity at 5:30 and the varsity at 6:30 p.m., in the main gym.
Wednesday will be Out of the World Wednesday. The high school girls will play powder puff football at Starbuck Stadium at 7 p.m. Again, the community is urged to turn out to cheer on this gridiron contest.
Thursday is Cowboy Pride Day. The student council will host a community spirit-raising bonfire at the Rio Blanco County Fairgrounds at 8:30 p.m. The school hopes many district residents and parents will come join students, the high school band, cheerleaders and athletes for the celebration. Students are urging folks to bring their own chairs. Prior to the bonfire, the junior varsity and varsity softball teams have home games against Basalt at 4 and 6 p.m.
Friday is Homecoming Day. A Meeker sports fund-raising barbecue will be held starting at 11 a.m. and go until 1 p.m. on the courthouse lawn. Shana and Matt Holliday will be singing and playing music. At 1 p.m., the annual Homecoming Parade will begin down Main Street, followed by a pep assembly at the courthouse.
Meeker High School’s cross-country team will be competing against Delta High School at Sweitzer State Park, beginning at 10 a.m. Unfortunately, a home event for them could not be scheduled. The junior varsity and varsity volleyball teams will play against Grand Junction’s Caprock Academy here at 5 and 6 p.m. in the main gym.
The football game Friday, which begins at 7 p.m., versus Lake County High School, features a halftime show including the crowning of Homecoming royalty. The cheer team and high school marching band will also perform.
On Saturday, activities includes home volleyball games with Plateau Valley High School at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. The main event, of course, is the Homecoming dance, for Meeker High School students only, in the Administration Building gym, starting at 8 and ending at 11 p.m.
Asked for a quote regarding the week, high school secretary and former Meeker mayor Mandi Etheridge said, “Go Cowboys!”
