CNCC women’s basketball opens with two wins

RANGELY I The Colorado Northwestern Community College women’s basketball team kicked off its season with two wins at the Little Big Horn Classic on Oct. 30-31 in Crow Agency, Mont.

The Lady Spartans opened the two-day classic against the host team, Little Big Horn College Rams, out of Region IX. From the game’s opening tip-off, the Lady Spartans dominated the first quarter, starting the game on a 33-0 run.
CNCC’s momentum continued throughout the rest of the game as the Lady Spartans went on to win 98-39 over the Rams.
The Lady Spartans had four players reach double-digit scoring, including Rachel Prescott (19 points), Kelsey Harvey (12 points), Sarah Midgley (10 points), and Taylor Martin (10 points). Also scoring for the Lady Spartans were Cylee Tuimaunei (9 points), Megan Erickson (8 points), Shelby Harvey (8 points), Taylor Thomas (6 points), Tyra Rodriguez (5 points), Rylee Thompson (5 points), Kanani Naipo (5 points) and Sierra Reynolds (1 point).
Taylor Martin led the team in rebounding with seven total for the game. As a team, the Lady Spartans dished out 22 assists and had 18 steals in the winning effort.
On day two of the Rams Tip-Off Classic, CNCC Women’s Basketball defeated Salish Kootenai College 79-52. The Lady Spartans’ hot shooting carried over from the previous day as they shot a blistering 45 percent from the field on 29-65 shooting.
CNCC had a balanced attack with nine different players scoring on their way to a 27-point victory. Scoring for the Lady Spartans were Shelby Harvey (19 points), Rachel Prescott (15 points), Taylor Thomas (10 points), Kelsey Harvey (9 points), Rylee Thompson (7 points), Cylee Tuimaunei (6 points), Taylor Martin (6 points), Tyra Rodriguez (5 points), and Kanani Naipo (2 points).
The Lady Spartans collected another 13 steals and finished with 20 assists. Cylee Tuimaunei led all rebounding against Salish Kootenai College with eight total rebounds in the win.
On Friday, CNCC takes on No. 20 Midland College (Texas) at 2 p.m., followed up by a 4 p.m., Saturday contest against Adams State University JV.
