MEEKER I The annual Ladies’ Deerfly Golf Tournament did not have a large field but the competition was tough, especially in the second flight, where local golfers Hallie Blunt and Sally Lou Shults won the title.
“Sally Lou has a strong back and she used it to carry me around,” teammate Hallie Blunt said after the tournament.
Blunt and Shults shot a 36 on the first nine holes of the 18-hole tournament, and so did locals Jill Massey and Danielle Feola, as well as Glenwood Springs golfers Dorlene Roy and Joni Bates, but it was Blunt and Shults who turned around and shot 39 on the back nine to win by three strokes.
Roy and Bates finished with the best net score (52) in the field of five teams in the second flight. Feola won the longest drive contest and Bates won a gift certificate for being closest to the pin.
The tournament featured golfers from Meeker, Craig, Glenwood Springs and Rifle and in the championship flight of six teams, it was Rifle golfers who won most of the prizes.
Kenda Spaulding and Britt Choate of Rifle trailed Marge Fleming and Gigi Herzke by two shots after the first nine, but they came back to shoot a one-over-par 35 on the back nine to win by one shot.
Flemming and Hertzke finished with the best net score (54) in the championship flight while Craig’s Amanda Back had the longest drive and Julia Conrad, also of Rifle, won the closest to the pin contest.
“It was such a pretty day for the tournament,” Peggy Back, president of the Meeker Ladies Club said.
It is the Meeker Ladies Club that hosts the tournament, and all the proceeds from the tourney go back into the clubhouse or the grounds, Back said.
Back wants to invite local women to join the fun, as the Ladies Club plays every Monday at 5:45 p.m.
