Days Gone By: May 10, 2018

The Meeker Herald — 100 years ago

– The press is not all powerful, but it is a power to be reckoned with. For the past few weeks the Herald has been urging taxpayers in the Meeker school district to wake up and take an interest in the school election of last Monday; and the result was a good outpouring of citizens interested in better school privileges for Meeker. Continue to be interested in school matters.
– P.F. Welsh, a Meeker pioneer and for many years a resident of this place, but who, for several years past, has been prominently identified with the wonderful oil development of Wyoming, spent a few days in town latter part of last week.

The Meeker Herald — 50 years ago

– Fire destroyed a barn, a grainery, 300 tons of baled hay, 60 tons of feed concentrate and a pickup and damaged a house at the B.P. Franklin Hereford ranch east of Meeker late Saturday. In addition, five registered bulls were killed.
– Phillip A. Jensen, Jr. who will graduate with highest honors in his class of 54 at Meeker High School has accepted an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

The Meeker Herald — 25 years ago

– Meeker senior Jim Michels finished fourth in the state track tournament with a time of 16.04 in the 110-meter finals.

Rangely Times — 50 years ago

– Governor John Love presented Colorado State Patrolman James Johnson the 1968 Governor’s trophy for making the high score in the State Patrol FBI Practical Pistol Course.
– Bernard Yaeger, mayor of Rangely, is a man with a rather enviable title. He is a “Man with 40,000 Sweethearts.” It’s official, too. At a meeting of the Theta Epsilon Zeta chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, Yaeger received a colorful wall plaque proclaiming him to have just such a following of admirers.

Rangely Times — 25 years ago

– Roxie Long’s friends are all headed to Nashville, one is even in a Bellamy Brothers video called “Hard, Hard Way.” Amy Walsh, niece of James and Vicki Claybaugh, appears in the audience.
