Lady Cowboys to host league tourney

MEEKER | Cowboy volleyball is undefeated after the regular season has ended; one of three volleyball teams remaining in the state that can tout that record. The girls have had 20 wins, but even more impressive is that only two sets were lost in regular season play.
The most recent win, and end to regular season play, came against Soroco last Saturday. Hosting the Rams for the Pink Out game and senior night, the Cowboy house was full and loud. The defense was on point, and head coach Greg Cravens commented that “we have been working hard in practice at team defense and fine tuning our offense.” There have been 1167 digs this year, with only 95 errors. Leading the team is Lila Klinglesmith with 317.
The offense did their job against Soroco, averaging 17 earned points a set, which is “exactly where we need to be,” said Cravens. Attacking with 11.1 kills per set, a total of 657, Krissie Luce, Sydnie Main and Julia Dinwiddie each have put up triple digits.
“I would like to thank all of those that came out on Saturday,” said Cravens, “What a great atmosphere and I’m so happy we can host the league tournament and hopefully regionals so everyone can watch these girls show off their skills.”
Volleyball district tournaments have been eliminated and there is now a league tournament prior to regionals. The Cowboys are ranked number one in the league and have earned the honors to host. The Western Slope League tournament will be Vail Mountain, Vail Christian, Meeker, Rangely and Paonia. Matches begin Friday at 1 p.m. at the Meeker High School. This is a round robin tournament format and the Cowboys will play two games each day, Friday and Saturday. “This weekend is going to be a very exciting weekend. I’m sure everyone wants another crack at us and we need to be at our best,” Cravens said about the teams in the Western Slope League. “It’s a great lead up to regionals.” Currently ranked number two in the RPI, the Cowboys hope to host regionals and need to be ranked in the top 12 to do so. RPI for regionals and the regional bracket information will be out late Sunday or early Monday.
