MEEKER | The 2018 lady Cowboys basketball season is upon us. Coming off a successful 18-6 season in 2017-2018, the Cowboys will host the Cowboy Shoot Out this Thursday and Friday as their opening games. The coaching staff is led by head coach Jamie Rogers, who is in her ninth year of coaching and third year as head coach; Lori Chintala and Ivy Coryell. Chintala has 30-plus years experience in Meeker and Simla, Colo., as a basketball coach, working with junior high school and JV teams building the future varsity players. Coryell, who is in her third year of coaching, “Brings a tremendous amount of energy to the gym,” Rogers said.
Twenty-six girls are out for the season and there are five seniors: Ellie Anderson, Gracie Bradfield, Tori Lasker, Sydnie Main, Megan Shelton and Kenzie Turner. With so many on the team, the practices will be split a couple of days with a goal of “giving every girl what they need to succeed,” Rogers said. “We will always come together for pregame.”
Basketball is highly dependent on the success of five players working in unison as a team to achieve a common goal, ball in hoop. “I have told them from day one they are a beautiful team,” Rogers said. Working together efficiently every game has a different high scorer. “We have three rebounders who get eight to 10 a game, two girls returning who are in the top 10 for assists in 2A basketball, and sprinter who takes her job as a defensive leader seriously,” Rogers continued.
The lady Cowboys first game of the Cowboy Shoot Out will be Thursday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 p.m. taking on Bluejays from Mancos, Colo., at the Meeker High School.
