MEEKER | The Cowboy track team was divided on Saturday as seven pole vaulters traveled to Gypsum for the Eagle Valley meet and the rest of the team headed to Grand Junction for the Frank Woodburn Invitational.

In Gypsum the vaulters benefited from the good weather. Kenzie Turner had her best performance of the season with her vault of 8 feet 6 inches and taking fourth place. Sydnie Main also vaulted her season’s best at 8 feet-even placing fifth. Main recorded another season’s best in discus with a throw of 118 feet 8 inches which was 18 feet ahead of second place. That throw and the shot mark she earned on Tuesday in Glenwood Springs puts her near the top of the state in both throws. Main came in fifth in shot at Gypsum.

For the boys, the pole vault contained a loaded field, and Tevin Pelloni was once again the top Cowboy, placing eighth with his mark of 11 feet, and Colby Clatterbaugh was in a four-way tie for ninth place.

The Frank Woodburn Invitational was a large meet with more than 20 teams and 850 athletes competing. “Gracie looked good running her first open 400-meter run of the season in 59.51 seconds, taking second place,” commented head coach John Strate.

Also placing in Grand Junction was senior Pake Burke who ran a personal best in the 300-meter hurdles improving by more than two seconds in his time, coming in at 48.11 seconds. Julia Dinwiddie placed eighth in the 300-meter hurdles with her season best time of 52.99 seconds. Senior Tannen Kennedy placed seventh in the 400-meter run with his time of 55.23 seconds. The women’s 4×100 meter relay came in sixth, and in the longest distance event, freshman Shane Kobald, “ran a promising 3,200-meter run given it was his first time competing at that distance,” Strate said.

Next week the Cowboys will be in Glenwood Springs on Friday and Saturday for the Demon Invitational.  “The Demon is another large meet with 20 teams scheduled to compete so our kids will continue to be pushed,” said Strate, “We typically start to see times come down starting next weekend with how our training schedule is lined out.”
