– Yesterday was Arbor Day but it was only indifferently observed here in Meeker. This apathy should not exist. The planting of trees enhances the value of the individual’s property and beautifies the town. A town with shady streets impresses visitors favorably.
– The Highland Cemetery association is going to be in the swim in the matter of improvements. They are grading up the walks, planting shade trees and seeding the ground to lawn grass, and making the place as inviting as it is possible to make a “city of the dead.”

– Most of the people of Rio Blanco County are aware by this time that we have purchased the mercantile business of J. W. Hugus & Co., and they have expressed to us the cordial business relations that they have enjoyed with some other people with whom we have not had the pleasure of doing business with in the past, but we certainly hope that all their customers will become our customers and we assure you that any business entrusted to us, will be handled in the same manner in which they have always been pleased to handle it. Believing that the same will be for our mutual advantage, we solicit your business. Yours truly, A. Oldland & Co.

– After a softly-shuffling herd of eager youngsters swept over the court house lawn during Saturday morning’s annual Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Meeker Lions Club, the many youngsters and their homemade Easter baskets were judged by Audrey Oldland, Judi Brown and Christine Halandras. The overall winners and their prizes were from left: Joe Murray, second place; Bruce Eaton, first place and Wade George, third prize winner.
– The Meeker fire department answered its first alarm in seven months, when they were called to the Jim Kilduff rental home 22 miles west of Meeker on Piceance Creek road at 5:45 p.m., Thursday, April 3. Actual fire damage was confined to the wall and attic which was kept under control by Mrs. Kilduff and neighbors using a garden hose until the fire department arrived and quickly extinguished the flames.
– Thirteen-year-old Michael Sizemore, who was airborne for 40 feet in a snowmobile machine and then dropped 20 feet vertically, is now resting comfortably at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, where he is recovering satisfactorily from a fractured right leg. The accident which occurred Sunday morning, resulted in a 12-hour rescue operation.

– In the only race for a Meeker Town Council seat, Brice Glasscock emerged victorious over Marty Ball with a 104-56 voter margin in Tuesday’s election. The two-year term Glasscock will be serving was previously held by trustee Lisa Cook, appointed by the council last fall to fill out Jim Vinson’s term, but who chose not to run.
– In a field of unusually stiff competition, Meeker High School art student Nicola Lee Davis placed third in the annual Anne Frank Art Competition for her painting ‘Peaces of Change.’
– A second hole-in-one was recorded at the Meeker Golf Course this past Sunday as local apprentice pro Jim Cook was surprised to receive his Easter Day present.

– Harvey’s Electric, Inc. has purchased the Rio Roll building owned by Dos Polley a block north of Main Street and is moving their business operation there. They formerly were located two miles west of Rangely.
– B.P. (Port) Franklin of Meeker was recently awarded $120,000 in a verdict by a Weld County jury for the loss of a herd of cattle killed or incapacitated by urea poisoning in November 1967. He had sued John Ewing and Co. of LaSalle, a feed mill, for the loss of the cattle.

– Two new businesses have become a reality in Rangely this week. First is the J.S. Travel Agency which opened officially at 711 E. Main. A grand opening will follow later. The second, which will officially open tomorrow, is Dusty’s Gun Shop.
– Since the County seat is in the other end of the County, it’s not very often that a department head resides in Rangely. Presently there is TV head Tom Suchar and in the recent past, when there was such a position, the Use Tax Administrator. Add to that now the position of head County Health Nurse. Connie Hughes will be retiring from that position and at a meeting of the County Commissioners held in Meeker, Rangely resident Diane Banta, and County Nurse for this end, was unanimously named to the head position. She will remain in Rangely and her weekly hours will increase from 32 to 40.
