MEEKER | The Demon Invite in Glenwood Springs started out cold, with snow covering the ground and less than favorable conditions, but that did not stop the Cowboys.

“We had a good day in Glenwood with a number of personal bests and a solid overall team performance,” said head coach John Strate.

The meet was two days with pole vault competition taking place Friday, and many on the team clearing new heights. Freshman Kelton Turner beat his personal best by 2 feet with his vault of 12 feet 1 inch, bringing home second place.

“It was really exciting to watch him put everything together,” said Strate.

Tevin Pelloni, took fifth with his vault of 11-1, which put two Cowboys in the top six.

Kenzie Turner also improved her season best height to 9-1, which placed her third. The second lady Cowboy in the top six was Sydnie Main, clearing a new season best of 8-1 inch placing fifth. While not placing, freshman Aspen Merrifield cleared opening height for the first time, and another class of Cowboy vaulters is finding success.

There were 20 teams in attendance at the invite, another large meet, and the girls’ team finished second to host Glenwood Springs, narrowly missing by three points.

The girls’ 4×100 meter relay of Gracie Bradfield, Turner, Megan Shelton and Sarah Kracht took first with a time of 52.92 seconds.

The throwers continue to have success, Shelton won the discus and Main won the shot put. On the track Bradfield won the 200-meter dash with her season best time of 26.78 seconds. In the hurdles junior Julia Dinwiddie had a solid race, taking sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 18.46 seconds and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles finishing in 52.69 seconds.

On the boys’ side, Turner took to the track Saturday, running the 100-meter dash for the first time this season; his time of 11.7 seconds earned him fourth place. In the field events Jeremy Woodward had a great day in the long jump setting a new personal best of 19-10.75 to take second.

“This was a foot better than his previous jump,” Strate said.

The Cowboys have another packed weekend ahead with the team heading to Coal Ridge on Friday and Rangely on Saturday.
